WattWise: Edge-AI Smart Energy Monitor for Appliance-Level Insights

As team lead, I led development of WattWise, a smart energy-monitoring system that pairs a clamp-on CT-sensor device (Arduino) with a React Native app to reveal appliance-level usage from a single mains feed using Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Power signals stream over MQTT to an AWS backend, where transformer models—trained on our own Sri Lankan dataset alongside UK-DALE—disaggregate consumption in near real time and present the results in a mobile app. We also explored future updates such as cost estimation, anomaly/peak detection, and savings recommendations. The project advanced to the finals of Sri Lanka’s premier digital innovation competition (Dialog Innovation Challenge 2023) from 1,200+ applicants, with the semi-finals and finals televised on TV Derana and Dialog TV Channel One.
