Introduction to Competent Communication

I gave a talk introducing the Competent Communication (CC) manual to newcomers to public speaking at the Gavel Club of the University of Moratuwa’s annual speech-crafting program, held ahead of Speech Olympiad, the university’s flagship intra-university public speaking competition. The CC manual is Toastmasters’ foundational guide of ten speech projects that systematically build core skills such as organization, vocal variety, body language, and persuasive delivery. I emphasized the first speech—the Ice Breaker—because many people get stuck before they discover their hidden strengths; starting with the Ice Breaker can kick-start one’s public-speaking journey.
